A Simple Explanation of Where We Are Today
To understand where wireless data is at and is going, you need to know a little bit about where we have been. Here in the USA there are two competing standards. The first is CDMA which evolved from the first analog cellular service ever offered. The second is GSM which was the first digital cellular service offered. GSM is by leaps and bounds the most accepted standard the world over so GSM data devices will work not only in the US but also in most countries overseas. CDMA is a technology that is primarily used in the USA only with very few exceptions.

One of the first characteristics you may hear about wireless data is something like 3G or 4G and how that 4G is better. Let me explain what this means. The G referred to here is a generic term related to the generation of wireless that a carrier is offering. So there currently are 4 generations of wireless commonly referred to as 1G, 2G, 3G and 4G. Occasionally some vendors will refer to intermediate increases in performance as 2.5G.
